Visual Sensitivity

Helene Mazur / Comment on this

I often wonder why others around me don’t seem to get as excited at looking out the window in a plane. The magic of being so high up and seeing from a totally new perspective is nothing short of amazing to me. The sun setting or rising around floating clouds, lights from cars in the dusk creating illuminated trails, crop circles with an amazing variety of greens, mountains peaking up into a different world. It is true that people have different sensitivities. Some people are hyper-sensitive to sounds, or smells, or taste. For me, it has always been visual. Sometimes when I am driving at the right time, a sunset illuminating a few buildings can make me pull over just to stare.

I paint to disappear into another world. A world that attracts me with its brilliance, energy, and design. On the best days I dance with my brush, experiment with color, put down confident marks and simplify the complex. There is nothing more thrilling to me than watching the sun move across the sky and light up what started as an ordinary day. A chance to reflect that in a painting is nothing short of magical. A pop of color in the right spot on a canvas can make me cry, and a thick brush stroke traveling down a road can take me away.

It is impossible to explain how I sometimes feel about what I see, and often equally impossible to try to capture it in a painting but it is my personal challenge to try, and to invite others to come along with me.
